Are these guys for real? 999 euros for a phone? (Look at www.technica.com.cy). I mean come on! It is just a phone at the end of the day and I don’t think it is worth spending 999 euros at 16GB, when it sells much much cheaper abroad (on contract).
Some people do take an advantage of the whole hype and make some big bucks (euros).
The new iPhone will be on sale this coming Friday and the news are already all over the web. The iPhone is the main item features, of course, on the Apple website and rightfully so since with it Apple managed to enter into a whole new dimension as far as sales and marketing go.
I wonder what the retail shops here in Cyprus will sell it for and when they will do so. As you might already know the iPhone is not officially being sold here but some retail stores do carry it for a hefty price (more than 600 Euros last time I checked).
From CNET: “Despite the best efforts of Apple and AT&T, it appears that the latest version of the iPhone has been unlocked via the same method as used on the original iPhone.
A Brazilian blog, TechGuru, posted the first report of it. Gizmodo checked it out, and said the method involves using a special SIM card adapter. It tricks the phone into thinking it’s on an approved network.
“This method forges the International Mobile Subscriber Identity, making the phone believe it’s working in the network in which it’s supposed to work,” Gizmodo writes.”
Maybe it is a bit too early to be true, but then again we wouldn’t be surprised if it has alread been unlocked. There is already a huge industry behind the unlocked version of the iPhone.
The new iPhone 3G will be available this coming Friday at 8 a.m. According to Apple‘s website (US) it will be available from Apple’s retail stores, as well as from AT&T outlets; Apple’s partner in the iPhone era.
If you click on the Apple site’s country settings now, you can also see that the iPhone will be available on the same day in another 20 countries, including Canada, Australia, Italy, UK and Norway to name a few.
It only remains to be seen now how long the queues will be on Thursday evening, outside the Apple and AT&T stores and how fast the phone will be unlocked and reach other countries where it is not officially on sale. 🙂
From Download.com: “The Android software stack is expected to provide handset makers and wireless operators an open platform they can use to develop new and innovative applications.”
“The new software will compete directly with smartphone software from other companies like Apple, Microsoft, Nokia, Palm and Research in Motion. Unlike some of these mobile operating systems, Android will not be tied to a specific device. Instead, the software will be able to work on a broad array of devices from handset makes such as Motorola, HTC, Samsung, and LG just to name a few.”
We came across the Soundtech website and they are advertising that they have the iPhone available in Cyprus, for 399 CYP/ €681.73 (8GB version). We cannot confirm whether availability is real or not, however, we do know that Soundtech is a real store and carries a wide selection of mobile phone models.
I wonder whether the phone comes unlocked or not?!
From the BBC: “An Apple software update is disabling iPhones that have been unlocked by owners who wanted to choose which mobile network to use.”
It’s worth noting that “Some owners are reporting on technology blogs and Apple’s own forums that the update is deleting contacts information, as well as photos and music, on iPhones that have not been modified in any way.”
According to the Pixmania webiste, the new iPod touch will be available for sale on the 28th of September, 2007. The 8GB model will be selling for 297 euros, while the 16GB model will be selling for a cool 398 euros.
At the same time the Cyprus Apple store is selling the 8GB model for 169.40 CYP and the 16GB for 226.06 CYP (no double price indications here). The Applestore seems to be a bit cheaper; but not even close to the US prices.
From News.com: “Security experts have discovered vulnerabilities in OpenOffice.org that could allow attackers to remotely execute code on Linux, Windows or Apple Mac-based computers.”
“OpenOffice version 2.0.4 and earlier versions are vulnerable to maliciously crafted TIFF files, which can be delivered in an e-mail attachment, published on a Web site or shared using peer-to-peer software. The next version of OpenOffice (version 2.3) arrived on September 17 and is not affected by the flaw.”
According to the UK version of the Apple website, the iPhone will hit Europe on November 9, 2007; or at least the UK. There are still no further details, like plans, device pricing, etc, so we still have to wait and see. I am pretty sure it will make for a good Christmas gift!
Apple released the beta version of their Safari browser. What is interesting though is that Safari 3 has also been release for the PC as well. It shouldn’t be bad and according to Apple it is the fastest of all. More coming soon!
Apple have announced the launch date for their new device, the iPhone. The launch will happen on 29th of June, 2007 and will be sold through AT&T (Cingular). The phone will sell for $499 and $599, depending on the the storage you choose
From BBC: “The launch of music tracks free of digital locks on iTunes has been overshadowed by the discovery that they contain data about who bought them.”
